Zella Marie Tutoring

I teach with a flexible, adaptive child-centred approach

My name is Zella, I am a former Assistant Head Teacher and the founder of Zella Marie Tutoring. I have over 20 years’ experience of teaching in busy classrooms and, since 2018, I have been tutoring pupils in my home-based classroom to support their home or school education. My long career has equipped me with the skills to change my style of delivery according to individual needs resulting in clear pupil progress. I teach with a flexible, adaptive child-centred approach; I am both intuitive and natural in my teaching and pride myself in teaching the pupil rather than subjects. I am a firm believer that it is the teacher and the positive relationship they build with their pupils that makes the biggest difference to academic achievement.

Encouraging pupils to rediscover their will and interest to learn

In the classroom I always had a particular interest in behaviour management and the psychology of learning. I take time to really get to know my pupils and the overriding thing they all say about lessons is that they are fun – there is a lot of learning too! It is of paramount importance to me that children want to come to our sessions. I see tutoring as an active two-way process between the pupil and myself – a child who wants to learn and engage is always more likely to achieve. Sometimes my challenge is encouraging pupils to rediscover their will and interest to learn after they have become disengaged with school, I achieve this through building a positive, supportive and encouraging relationship.

“It’s the teacher that makes the difference, not the classroom” Michael Morpurgo.

Teaching is both my passion and my vocation. When I was 9 years old, I was lucky enough to be taught by an amazing and inspiring teacher who made me realise that I wanted to be a teacher just like her when I left school.

My whole life has been spent working with children in various capacities; one of my earliest memories is teaching my younger sister to read and playing ‘schools’ with her friends when they came to play. In my teens I volunteered in local schools and guiding units and went on to run a Rainbow unit. Whilst completing my teaching degree I worked as ‘play leader’ in a play centre organising children’s parties and activities and as a key worker in a local preschool. Fast forward more years than I want to count and I have had a career in education spanning more than 20 years, teaching in busy classrooms with pupils with a diverse range of needs and abilities.

Our story

I achieved a BAQTS (Hons) in Early Years and Childhood Studies from Chichester University in 2002. In a course that balanced the development of knowledge in child development, sociology and development with first hand experience and application, I was placed in a Worthing school during my final year. Upon completion of my studies I was offered a permanent position, this provided the opportunity to achieve my lifelong goal of being a teacher but also gave me a basis to continue to grow and develop. I held various roles in my time with the school including being the lead teacher for English, Science and Religious Education as well as leading KS1 and EYFS at various points and joining the Senior Management Team. I simultaneously sought to further my own learning, taking modules including Therapeutic Play and Interventions and Mentoring which led to me achieving an additional PGCE in Education.

I took a year away following the birth of my daughter, and shortly after returning I took the role of Assistant Head Teacher. I relished this challenge and found it hugely rewarding. However, with my daughter growing up so quickly, I decided in 2018 to make a change which would allow me to continue to work in a field I am passionate about whilst having more family time.

I’d always wanted to be able to offer individual pupils the support they needed to be able to keep up with the fast-paced curriculum – Zella Marie Ltd was founded on this principle. Each pupil deserves the bespoke support that every teacher wishes they had the time and resources to do. Utilising my wealth of knowledge, experience and expertise I set up my home classroom to be a safe, comfortable and encouraging working environment and since then I have taught many pupils and enabled them to learn to achieve!

Happy Pupils. Happy Parents.

I highly recommend Zella for her tutoring services. My son (age 7) was really struggling with reading and writing. Zella understood his learning needs. I noticed a difference within weeks when reading with him. She has given him so much confidence. I’m glad we found her, and I’m sure my son is too.

I like that I can talk about my mistakes and that I can look at them in a different way until I understand.

I can not recommend Zella enough, 5 stars is an understatement! Both my children have weekly sessions with Zella before & during this pandemic, one English one maths.
They have both come on leaps and bounds & their attitude to learning with her is amazing, they were no where near enthusiastic with me during lockdown!
Her fun fresh approach is definitely taking effect as my daughter has gone up a level in maths to year 6 work, she is so proud of herself which has given her a new found confidence to learning.
I can’t thank you enough, the kids were buzzing after their session with you last night !

Because I’m coming to you, I’m not scared of asking maths questions anymore and I’m moving on to extension tasks at school quicker every day!
Pupil, Year 5
I think my confidence has been powered up with tutoring.
Pupil, Year 3
I like coming here because its not with other children and if I don’t know an answer I don’t feel embarrassed.  At school if I get an answer wrong on the carpet my teacher says, “That’s not quite right” and asks someone else but here you help me right away.
Pupil, Year 5
I liked everything especially doing the quizzes because they were fun.  I also liked how kind Zella is.
I would like to say a big thank you because Zella helped me so much and now I am way smarter than I used to be.
Pupil, Year 6, end of tuition evaluation.
Its good when you keep trying different ways until I understand, you don’t give up and I don’t give up!
Pupil, Year 3
I feel like Einstein doing this! (N Year 6- learning to calculate angles)
Pupil, Year 6 - learning to calculate angles
It’s fun learning with games so it’s not just like more school stuff. You are way funnier than the teachers at school, you make learning way more fun.

Can’t recommend this lovely lady enough!
She has supported my little girl so much through these lockdowns (and me!) and has built a wonderful relationship with her, so much so she looks forward to every lesson she has with her.
She makes it fun and exciting whilst helping her to learn, always finding relatable exercises that is specific for my child.
Zella ensures she keeps you involved and does her upmost to accommodate you.
So glad I was reccomend to this gem of a lady. A million times over THANK YOU x

I love maths now! I just imagine your voice in my head when I’m doing it so I’m going to take your voice to school with me in my head to help me.

I highly recommend Zella for her tutoring services. Zella has been tutoring my daughter through Year 1. My daughter has made huge progress this year especially in her phonics. Zella worked so hard with her to help her understand her sounds and sent home those she found hard for us the practice. She went from really struggling with the practice phonics test words to totally smashing the test. Thank you Zella for all your support and encouragement
