About us
My name is Zella, I am a former Assistant Head Teacher and the founder of Zella Marie Tutoring. I have over 20 years’ experience of teaching in busy classrooms and, since 2018, I have been tutoring pupils in my home-based classroom to support their home or school education. My long career has equipped me with the skills to change my style of delivery according to individual needs resulting in clear pupil progress. I teach with a flexible, adaptive child-centred approach; I am both intuitive and natural in my teaching and pride myself in teaching the pupil rather than subjects. I am a firm believer that the positive relationships teachers build with their pupils makes the biggest difference to academic achievement.

How we learn
Much of my career has been spent within Early Years and Key Stage One. The experience I have in this means that I can utilise my skills to meet the needs of older pupils in a fun and meaningful way- KS2 SATs doesn’t need to spell dull and boring. My approach is relaxed and informal, balanced with a high expectation that pupils listen and try their best. My pupils will tell you that “I don’t know” isn’t an answer and that they always have to give their “best guess” and we work from there; this allows me to analyse their thought process.
Over the years, I have learned that the more captivating and enjoyable the learning is, the better the chance is that it will become retained knowledge. Every lesson is carefully paced with activities to engage pupils with memorable learning experiences that are tailored to fit within their interests. I target my learning plan at the child’s current achievement level and not necessarily their current year group. Very often pupils struggle at school because they have not fully understood earlier educational building blocks. Sometimes this is because at the point these were taught the pupil was not yet developmentally able to understand it and the fast-paced curriculum can leave little time to revisit concepts. When these early foundations are revisited and fully understood, pupils are better equipped to access the learning in the classroom-much like building a house children need strong foundations to build on.

I can not recommend Zella enough, 5 stars is an understatement! Both my children have weekly sessions with Zella before & during this pandemic, one English one maths.They have both come on leaps and bounds & their attitude to learning with her is amazing, they were no where near enthusiastic with me during lockdown!Her fun fresh approach is definitely taking effect as my daughter has gone up a level in maths to year 6 work, she is so proud of herself which has given her a new found confidence to learning.I can’t thank you enough, the kids were buzzing after their session with you last night !
I like coming here because its not with other children and if I don’t know an answer I don’t feel embarrassed. At school if I get an answer wrong on the carpet my teacher says, “That’s not quite right” and asks someone else but here you help me right away.
Its good when you keep trying different ways until I understand, you don’t give up and I don’t give up!

It’s fun learning with games so it’s not just like more school stuff. You are way funnier than the teachers at school, you make learning way more fun.
