Zella Marie

About us

My name is Zella, I am a former Assistant Head Teacher and the founder of Zella Marie Tutoring. I have over 20 years’ experience of teaching in busy classrooms and, since 2018, I have been tutoring pupils in my home-based classroom to support their home or school education. My long career has equipped me with the skills to change my style of delivery according to individual needs resulting in clear pupil progress. I teach with a flexible, adaptive child-centred approach; I am both intuitive and natural in my teaching and pride myself in teaching the pupil rather than subjects. I am a firm believer that the positive relationships teachers build with their pupils makes the biggest difference to academic achievement.

Quality, individualised lessons

I deliver quality, individualised lessons to support your child with their education; I cater for both home educated and school educated children. Your child, their personality, interests and needs are the focal point whilst meeting the requirements of the national curriculum or your family’s home curriculum. Many of my pupils arrive working below National Expectations, and I identify any educational gaps using subtle, stress-free assessments to ascertain their academic level. I use this to plan achievable steps that will develop the skills to enable them to progress.

I believe in teaching children the “why” as well as the “how” in learning, encouraging pupils to explore why concepts and ideas work, and how it is relevant to them in a real-life context. I also spend time developing their skills to “learn how to learn”, including talking about how the brain learns and remembers things and transferable study skills. My aim is for pupils to achieve a lifelong ethos for education and a love for learning, not just “enough to pass a test”, although of course, study skills and passing tests do form part of my teaching when it is required.

Knowing the “why” also helps to future-proof their learning and enables pupils to apply concepts in wider contexts. It also helps pupils to make explicit links between concepts; children often do not see the links that we as adults think are obvious.

How we learn

Much of my career has been spent within Early Years and Key Stage One. The experience I have in this means that I can utilise my skills to meet the needs of older pupils in a fun and meaningful way- KS2 SATs doesn’t need to spell dull and boring. My approach is relaxed and informal, balanced with a high expectation that pupils listen and try their best. My pupils will tell you that “I don’t know” isn’t an answer and that they always have to give their “best guess” and we work from there; this allows me to analyse their thought process.

Over the years, I have learned that the more captivating and enjoyable the learning is, the better the chance is that it will become retained knowledge. Every lesson is carefully paced with activities to engage pupils with memorable learning experiences that are tailored to fit within their interests. I target my learning plan at the child’s current achievement level and not necessarily their current year group. Very often pupils struggle at school because they have not fully understood earlier educational building blocks. Sometimes this is because at the point these were taught the pupil was not yet developmentally able to understand it and the fast-paced curriculum can leave little time to revisit concepts. When these early foundations are revisited and fully understood, pupils are better equipped to access the learning in the classroom-much like building a house children need strong foundations to build on.

Where we learn

Lessons are taught in my relaxed, home-based environment with all the resources and expertise of the primary classroom. The classroom is well stocked with a vast array of educational equipment to develop new skills and to facilitate their thinking and reasoning.

We’re based in Bognor Regis and have students coming to us from Bognor Regis, Barnham, Chichester, Yapton, Littlehampton and all over West Sussex. We also offer the option to provide online tuition.

Happy Pupils. Happy Parents.

I like coming here because its not with other children and if I don’t know an answer I don’t feel embarrassed.  At school if I get an answer wrong on the carpet my teacher says, “That’s not quite right” and asks someone else but here you help me right away.

Can’t recommend this lovely lady enough!
She has supported my little girl so much through these lockdowns (and me!) and has built a wonderful relationship with her, so much so she looks forward to every lesson she has with her.
She makes it fun and exciting whilst helping her to learn, always finding relatable exercises that is specific for my child.
Zella ensures she keeps you involved and does her upmost to accommodate you.
So glad I was reccomend to this gem of a lady. A million times over THANK YOU x

Its good when you keep trying different ways until I understand, you don’t give up and I don’t give up!
Pupil, Year 3
I like that I can talk about my mistakes and that I can look at them in a different way until I understand.
Pupil, Year 6
I can not recommend Zella enough, 5 stars is an understatement! Both my children have weekly sessions with Zella before & during this pandemic, one English one maths.
They have both come on leaps and bounds & their attitude to learning with her is amazing, they were no where near enthusiastic with me during lockdown!
Her fun fresh approach is definitely taking effect as my daughter has gone up a level in maths to year 6 work, she is so proud of herself which has given her a new found confidence to learning.
I can’t thank you enough, the kids were buzzing after their session with you last night !

I think my confidence has been powered up with tutoring.
Pupil, Year 3

I highly recommend Zella for her tutoring services. Zella has been tutoring my daughter through Year 1. My daughter has made huge progress this year especially in her phonics. Zella worked so hard with her to help her understand her sounds and sent home those she found hard for us the practice. She went from really struggling with the practice phonics test words to totally smashing the test. Thank you Zella for all your support and encouragement

It’s fun learning with games so it’s not just like more school stuff. You are way funnier than the teachers at school, you make learning way more fun.
Pupil, Year 4
I liked everything especially doing the quizzes because they were fun.  I also liked how kind Zella is.
I would like to say a big thank you because Zella helped me so much and now I am way smarter than I used to be.

I highly recommend Zella for her tutoring services. My son (age 7) was really struggling with reading and writing. Zella understood his learning needs. I noticed a difference within weeks when reading with him. She has given him so much confidence. I’m glad we found her, and I’m sure my son is too.

Parent, Review on Facebook
Because I’m coming to you, I’m not scared of asking maths questions anymore and I’m moving on to extension tasks at school quicker every day!
